Oneonta firemen, policemen and high school students served over 3,000 scoops of ice cream Sunday June 5th as part of the 4th Annual Ice Cream Social, brought to the community by Oneonta World of Learning (OWL).

Despite a morning of cloudy skies, volunteers gathered in Oneonta’s Wilber Park Sunday morning hoping that the weather would improve, which it did. Mild breezes and gentle sunshine encouraged participants to linger, enjoying an afternoon of fast paced dance performances and music in the park. Even the Taekwon-Do demonstrations were choreographed to upbeat music.

When not building towers, coloring the sidewalk or devising creations out of PVC pipe and connectors, children played with a magnetic accelerator, mock up Maglev Train and other science activities. One station that was never empty was next to the bubble soap. “This is always the most popular activity,” said Mary Peterson, long time OWL volunteer and founder of Amazable Science Adventures, who was eager to share her favorite recipe for bubble soap.

Even after the last scoop of ice cream was served and tents were being taken down, children kept on dancing on the mobile stage, in an impromptu dance party to the music of MTC DJ Service.
