Dinosaur Train!

If anyone in the family or the classroom is a fan of the new PBS show Dinosaur Train, then this is an event you won't want to miss!

Dinosaur Train is a relatively new great show from PBS.  Oneonta World of Learning (OWL) has received a grant to partner with PBS Kids, WSKG, and Leatherstocking Railroad Historical Society to present a Dinosaur Train event.

The Dinosaur Train event will take place on Wednesday, April 13th, featuring a one hour train ride filled with games and activities presented by PBS Kids and OWL. There will also be a meet and greet with Buddy the dinosaur, the main character of the Dinosaur Train show.

There are two opportunities on April 13th to ride the Dinosaur Train. The first train departs at 10am and the other at 1pm, from the Milford, NY depot.

This will also be a fabulous field trip opportunity for children up through first or second grade. Teachers can prepare their students for the event with one or more of the great lesson plans available at: http://www.pbs.org/teachers/dinosaurtrain/.

Reserve your tickets directly through the railroad by calling 607-432-2429.

Please download the Dinosaur Train Flier freely: Dinosaur Train Flier.

OWL would also like to thank our first new sponsor for the 2011-2012 sponsorship season! The Insurance Professinals of Chenango Valley (IPVC) have generously sponsored OWL for the entire year.

March Musical Madness and Much Much More

There are three big events coming to Oneonta this spring, including March Musical Madness, Nano Science Saturday, and Dinosaur Train!

piano_keys

March Musical Madness will be on Saturday, March 5th from 10am to noon, at Anderson Hall, Hartwick College, Oneonta. OWL and Hartwick College Music Department are joining forces to present a hands-on music discovery event. Have you ever wanted to play a violin? Wondered what it would be like to be a soloist in a jazz band? Wanted to build your own instrument? Do this and more at March Musical Madness. This event will also feature several mini-concerts by the various Hartwick College performing ensembles. There is a $5 suggested donation per child. You do not need to sign up ahead of time, just join in the fun!

Nano Science Saturday will probably be our best Science Saturday yet. Put it on your calendars for April 2, noon to 4pm. Young scientists will investigate super-thin materials, forces stronger than gravity and sand that doesn't get wet, even under water! Measure yourself in nanometers, use your nose as a nano detector and much more!  Get your Passport to Nano stamped at all the activity stations and take home a Nanoscience Prize Bag! This Science Saturday is brought to you by OWL and The Science Discovery Center. Unlike previous Science Saturdays, there are no separate workshops to sign up for. Instead, participants will visit multiple discovery stations. The location for this event will be in Science Building #1, SUNY Oneonta campus (which also differs from previous Science Saturday events).

Dinosaur Train is presented by OWL, WSKG and the Leatherstocking Railroad Historical Society (LHRS) on April 13th. This will be an activity filled train ride featuring the PBS show Dinosaur Train. Trains will depart from the Milford Depot at 10am and 1pm. The train ride lasts about 1 hour. Tickets are $7.50 per person. All activities are included with your ticket purchase. Childen under 2 ride for free. Make your reservation directly through the LHRS by calling 432-2429.

Teachers! This will be a great field trip opportunity, appropriate for grades pre-k through 1st.

OWL open house - what you may want to know

Oneonta World of Learning (OWL) will offer an Open House on Wednesday, February 2nd at 7:30 pm at the Main View Gallery on Main Street in Oneonta.
You are invited to come learn more about us, as well as how you can get more involved. You can also contact us at worldflearning@live.com or call 431-8543.

Oneonta World of Learning (OWL) is an emerging children’s museum. OWL is chartered as a museum with the New York State of Regents and has recently obtained 501c3 status. OWL’s ultimate goal is to have a physical space, open to the public 7 days a week. As we build to that goal, we have committed to partnering with other local organizations and using other public spaces to bring regular events to children and their families.

OWL also would like to invite anyone interested in joining the organization's board.

Questions perspective board members may ask…

1. What is the mission? Our Mission is to become a community resource providing a place for interactive learning through play for children and their grownups.

2. What is the culture of the board? We are a passionate and committed board comprised mostly of educators who struggle with the business aspects of creating a museum. We are creating this museum from the ground up.

3. Why are you interested in having me as a member? We are looking to expand our board with skills and talents that compliment our needs.

4. How often does the board meet? Board meetings are the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 7:30. Meetings tend to be 2 hours plus as we are a working board. In addition to running the operation, we are creating documents and policies required to establish a museum, and part of each meeting is devoted to this.

5. Does the museum have a strategic plan? Yes. It is scheduled for an update in March during a board retreat TBA.

6. Do board members receive written material ahead of time? Yes

7. How is the budget developed and who develops it? This is a joint effort between the development and finance committees. This is an area in need of improvement and guidance.

8. Is it a fundraising board? Whereas fundraising has not been a requirement of board members up to this point, now that we have our not for profit status it is our responsibility as a board to ensure that we have the financial capability to achieve our mission. We have 100% contribution by our board members.

9. Are board members expected to serve on committees? Yes. All members are expected to serve on 1 committee and it is suggested that you severe on more as you are able. The committees meet monthly but not all committees are active at this time.

10. Do you have directors and officers liability insurance? This is pending and we expect to be fully covered by March 2011.

11. Who are the key staff? OWL is an all volunteer organization and we are a working board. We have no staff members at this time.

The OWL board has always been financially responsible because we know that we are liable for our decisions. We believe that we are now comfortable in our position to move forward.

Open House on Ground Hog Day

Are you interested in learning more about OWL?  Have you thought about becoming an OWL volunteer?  Would you be interested in becoming a member of the OWL Board of Directors?  Join OWL for an open house on Wednesday, February 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Main View Gallery on Main Street, Oneonta to find out more about OWL.  Light refreshments will be served.

About Oneonta World of Learning:

Oneonta World of Learning (OWL) is a children's museum in search of walls, registered with the New York State Board of Regents, and a 501c3 not for profit organization.

The museum has brought together a coalition of volunteer parents, artists, educators and other local professionals, dedicated to a common goal. While we do not yet have a permanent location, we are known for collaborative family friendly events such as Paintfest!, the Ice Cream Social, and Science Saturdays.

A children's museum is not a museum in the classic sense. Exhibits are meant to be hands on, with engaging, kid-friendly activities. Oneonta World of Learning will be a community resource providing an interactive and engaging environment for play and exploration. The number of potential exhibits is countless, but will be designed to foster parent child interaction, learning through play, and clear educational goals.

We envision a world where children will grow to be creative, confident, and caring members of society by discovering the essential components of community. Children will become active problem-solvers through invention and guided play. Far from being controlled play, guided play simply means that a minimum of inspiration, ideas, or parameters will be provided to engage children’s interest in an activity.
